2019 Bloomington Primary|Council Candidate District 5: Ryan Maloney
Outcome: Isabel Piedmont-Smith won the Democratic Party primary for District 5 with 1,027 votes (81.38 percent), compared to 235 votes (18.62 percent for Ryan Maloney. [Full results here]
Ryan Maloney is running for a four-year term on the Bloomington Common Council representing District 5. He faces incumbent Isabel Piedmont-Smith in the May 7, 2019 Democratic Party primary. No Republicans will appear on the primary ballot in this district.
District 5 covers portions of south and southeast Bloomington. (Click here for a map of city districts.)
Maloney is a senior at Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs, majoring in law and public policy.
On his campaign website, Maloney lists his key issues as public safety, smart growth and development, and traffic and transportation. Other issues he highlights are workforce affordable housing, addressing the “brain drain,” public works and city infrastructure, and homelessness and addiction.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Maloney has worked as a driver for Miller Transportation Inc. and Carte Blanche Limousine during his time as a student at IU. He co-founded the Monroe County chapter of Indiana Young Democrats, and served as chapter president of the Phi Alpha Delta pre-law fraternity.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Maloney has lived in Bloomington since 2016. He moved here after receiving an associate’s degree from Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nevada.
Maloney is serving as his own campaign treasurer and chair.
