2019 delivers one of the coldest Novembers on record for Indy, Bloomington

With its mean average temperature of 37.1 F degrees, the eleventh month of 2019 ranked as the fifth coldest November on record for Bloomington.

That’s  based on numbers from the Indiana University weather station. Records from the campus station, available through the NOAA Climate Center, go back 1895, with some gaps. (One caveat: The final two days of November this year are among the gaps in the temperature data.)

Bloomington’s November this year featured three record lows for a specific date, and they came on three successive days: 9 F on Nov. 12, 8 F on Nov. 13, and 10 F on Nov. 14.

This year’s average of 37.1 degrees for November is 7.5 degrees colder than the normal for November, which is 44.6 degrees. The “normal” mean average is defined based on the period from 1981 to 2010.

The three record lows for a given date this November add to one additional record daily low this year, which was logged at the end of January: -10 F degrees on Jan. 31:

The gap in daily temperature data reported from the IU campus station this year, from late August through most of October was due to some construction at the site, according to NOAA.

For the Indianapolis area, this year’s temperature profile for November is similar to Bloomington’s. The period of record for the Indy area goes back to 1871.

In Indy, three record lows were logged for specific days in November this year: 24 F on Nov. 1; 8 F on Nov. 12 and 9 F on Nov. 13.

That makes for a total of five record daily lows for the year so far in the Indianapolis area. The other two came on Jan. 30 (-11 F) and March 4 (2 F). INDthreadYTDNOV2019

For the Indianapolis area, the 37.7 mean average for November this year made it the 15th coldest November on record. That’s 5.9 degrees colder than the normal November mean, which is 43.6 F.
