Volunteers are putting new plants into the bed on the grounds of the Monroe County historic courthouse. The work is prompted in part by storm damage, which took out an oak tree in August 2025. The planting is funded in part by a $1,500 grant from the Monroe County Master Gardeners. In addition to replacing damaged plants, the new scheme uses a different mix of sun-tolerant species for the bed, which is now out of the shade of the oak tree. Plants include milkweed to support monarch butterflies. (Dave Askins, April 30, 2026)
