After Peach Bowl win, IU football team lands safely, then has minor taxiway incident

Indiana University’s football team flew home Saturday after its 56–22 Peach Bowl win, but the arrival included a brief ground incident. A Monroe County airport official said the team’s jet left the pavement while taxiing to park and got stuck in turf. No injuries or damage were reported.

On Saturday afternoon, the Indiana University football team landed safely back at the Monroe County airport, after vanquishing the Oregon Ducks 56–22 in the Peach Bowl the night before.

But according to Monroe County airport director Carlos Laverty, there was a “minor excursion” by the jet carrying the team—after the landing when the aircraft was taxiing to the parking apron. Responding to an emailed B Square question, Laverty put it like this: “[T]he aircraft turned too tightly on one of the taxiways, and the right-hand landing gear left the pavement and entered the turf, causing the aircraft to become stuck.”

According to Laverty, there were no injuries and no damage to the aircraft.

Instead of trying to move the jet with the team still on board, buses were brought directly out onto the taxiway, and the team got off the plane safely along with their luggage, according to Laverty.

The plane was later removed from the turf and was able to move on the taxiway under its own power, Laverty wrote.

Laverty wrapped up his message saying, “Overall, the situation was handled smoothly and without any operational or safety impacts.”
