Bloomington annexation hearing updates: Possible postponement until 4 p.m. with no in-person access

The Bloomington city council announced in a news bulletin released a few minutes after 2 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 4) a possible change to its scheduled 3 p.m. public hearing at city hall on annexation.

The council could consider a motion to postpone the start of the meeting until 4 p.m.

If the motion were to pass, the news release seems to indicate the meeting would resume at 4 p.m. but would be accessible only through electronic participation.

The meeting had been advertised as one that would take place in hybrid fashion. That is, it would be accessible either in person or via the Zoom video conference platform.

[Updated at 3:54 p.m. Around 3:15 the council voted unanimously to recess the scheduled meeting and to reconvene at 4 p.m. When it resumes at 4 p.m. the meeting will be accessible only electronically.]

[Updated at 7:22 p.m. Sometime before 7 p.m. there was no remaining queue of attendees on Zoom who wanted to speak at the public hearing. A that point, the city council deliberated on how to accommodate those who might have been deprived of an opportunity to speak by the council’s decision to cancel the in-person component of the hearing.

The outcome of those deliberations was to recess, but not end, the public hearing. The hearing will be continued next week at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11. That means anyone who did not speak on Aug. 4 at the public hearing on annexation will have another chance in a week.]
