Bloomington police: SUV turned into path of truck in fatal crash near SR 45/46 and I-69
An 85-year-old Bloomington man was killed Thursday morning when police say his SUV turned into the path of a box truck on SR 45/46 near I-69. The truck driver was taken to a hospital and voluntarily submitted to a blood draw. Bloomington police are investigating.

On Thursday morning (July 9) an 85-year-old Bloomington man driving a sport utility vehicle eastbound on SR 45/46, waiting to turn north to get on I-69, was killed when he turned directly into the path of a large box truck headed westbound on SR 45/46.
That’s according to a news release from Bloomington police on Thursday afternoon. Police are not releasing any information about the man while the investigation is still underway.
The truck is described in the news release as a large 2024 International box truck. The vehicle driven by the Bloomington man who was killed was a 2005 Cadillac SRX sport utility vehicle.
According to the news release the time of the response was 10:40 a.m. and when the emergency medical team arrived, they found the driver dead at the scene.
The description of the Cadillac waiting in the left turn lane to head north on I-69, then suddenly turning into the path of the truck, came from a passenger in the truck, according to the release. The box truck crashed into the passenger side of the SUV and both vehicles went off the north side of the roadway and landed in a ditch.
The driver of the truck was identified in the news release as a 46-year-old man from Orleans, who did not show signs of impairment. He was taken to a local hospital, where he voluntarily submitted to a blood draw for analysis. The news release says that is standard procedure for drivers involved in a crash resulting in serious bodily injury or death.
The news release says that Indiana State Police helped Bloomington police at the scene because the crash involved a commercial vehicle, the box truck. It is the crash reconstruction team for the Bloomington police department that is handling the investigation.
