Kate Wiltz, who was Munson’s colleague on the council, relayed a message from Jennifer Munson, Cheryl’s daughter: “Cheryl passed away peacefully this afternoon, surrounded by family and friends.”

Arrangements are being made through Allen Funeral Home.

Munson had just won re-election to her seat as an at-large member the council, which is the fiscal body of the county. She had been unable to attend meetings for the last several weeks due to illness. Munson was 80 years old.

The regular county council meeting, which was set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, will be postponed, and scheduled business will be taken up on Dec. 17.

Wiltz said the council is putting off Tuesday’s meeting, to give family, friends, and the Monroe County community space to grapple with the magnitude of their loss.

[Added Dec. 11, 2024. The Monroe County Democratic Party released a statement Wednesday morning, which includes a quote from party chair and county councilor-elect David Henry: “Cheryl was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her love for Monroe County, depth of knowledge about our community and its people knew no bounds, and her contributions to the community are immeasurable. While we are saddened by her loss, we also celebrate the incredible life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind. We pause to remember Cheryl and honor her memory during this difficult time.”]
