Construction crane knocks out power to 2K Duke customers in Bloomington, now down to 100

On Monday afternoon, the power outage for nearly 2,000 customers in the north central part of Bloomington was caused by a construction crane that hit a Duke Energy high voltage transmission line, according to a Duke Energy spokesperson.

According to Duke Energy, the construction crane was working on new apartment construction on 14th Street.

That’s the site of The Standard, which is a 1,000-bed complex that is replacing the former Brownstone Terrace.

According to Duke Energy the outage affected Indiana University offices as well as some local government offices.

Around 3:25 p.m. Monroe County government sent home employees who work in the old courthouse and the new justice center, including the courts and the prosecutor’s office.

The Duke Energy outage map  puts the onset of the outage at 2:45 p.m. By around 5:15 p.m. the number of customers without power was down to around 100.

The estimated time for restoration of power for remaining customers who are without power is 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 20.

Around 5 p.m. Bloomington city hall was reportedly running on generator power.
