2019 Bloomington Primary|Council Candidate District 5: Isabel Piedmont-Smith
Outcome: Isabel Piedmont-Smith won the Democratic Party primary for District 5 with 1,027 votes (81.38 percent), compared to 235 votes (18.62 percent) for Ryan Maloney. [Full results here]
Isabel Piedmont-Smith is seeking re-election to a third four-year term on the Bloomington Common Council representing District 5. She faces Ryan Maloney in the May 7, 2019 Democratic Party primary. No Republicans will appear on the primary ballot in this district.
District 5 covers portions of south and southeast Bloomington. (Click here for a map of city districts.)
Piedmont-Smith is fiscal officer and department administrator for Indiana University’s Department of French & Italian, a job she’s held since 1998. She was first elected to council in 2007. Citing family obligations, she did not seek re-election in 2011, but returned in 2015 to win another four-year term.
During her council tenure, Piedmont-Smith has co-authored the city’s “green building” ordinance and served on several advisory groups, including the Plan Commission and the Environmental Commission. She currently is a member of the Common Council Land Use Committee, the Policy Committee of the Bloomington/Monroe County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Jack Hopkins Social Services Funding Committee, and the Public Safety Local Income Tax Committee of the Monroe County Local Income Tax Council.
She is known for holding monthly constituent sessions, which are posted on her council web page.
Piedmont-Smith grew up in Bloomington. She received a bachelor’s degree in history from Oberlin College and a master’s degree in social studies education from Boston University.
She is married to David Smith, who works for Baxter Pharmaceuticals.
Penny Githens is Piedmont-Smith’s campaign treasurer. Piedmont-Smith is serving as her own campaign chair.
