Edgewood sharpens up with test against Indian Creek, season starts against Mitchell next week

On Friday night, the Edgewood Mustangs tuned up for next week’s home opener against Mitchell with a scrimmage against Indian Creek. Edgewood’s coach Scott Fischer: “I feel pretty good about where we’re at and the direction we’re going. I thought the kids’ energy was pretty good.”

On Friday night, the Edgewood Mustangs tuned up for next week’s home opener against Mitchell with a scrimmage against Indian Creek—a team that has gotten the better of Edgewood’s eleven for the last decade. That includes Indian Creek’s 35–7 defeat of the Mustangs in last year’s sectional tournament play.

Friday’s meeting was a controlled scrimmage, which means the teams ran a set number of plays from different spots on the field rather than playing a regulation game. The idea was to get in plenty of reps in game-like conditions, not to decide a winner.

Still, the Braves of Indian Creek looked like the stronger side on Friday—the Mustangs gave up some long pass plays in the early action.

But for the more than 200 home fans who watched from the bleachers, there were plenty of bright spots. When the field was short, the Mustangs defense dug in and made it tough for the team from Trafalgar to put the ball over the goal line.

As lopsided as last year’s sectional game was, Edgewood coach Scott Fischer told The B Square that it was even worse on the field. Compared to his squad’s performance in last year’s sectional game, Fischer told The B Square after Friday’s scrimmage, “I thought we played much better on the defensive side of the ball. Still got a lot of stuff to clean up on offense.”

Fischer said the next morning at 8 a.m. the team would be reviewing film of the scrimmage to start taking care of some of the weak spots.

Quarterback Braylon Linerode had some success with the short passing game, including a shovel pass to Reece Roberts that scored a touchdown. But he did not look as sharp hitting receivers on longer routes. About his QB, Fischer said it was Linerode’s first game since he was a freshman: “So, you know, he’s inexperienced. I’m sure the game was going fast for him today.”

Fischer continued, “He’ll study his butt off. He’ll watch film all week. He’ll be much better going into next weekend.” The coach added, “I was really happy with how he stayed in the pocket and worked his feet, worked around and tried to get the ball out.”

The offensive line has some work to do to help the long passing game, Fischer said: “And some of the deep stuff—that’s where we got to fix things at the offensive line.” He added, “We missed some [blocking] assignments in terms of when you take that deep drop, you gotta give it time to develop a little bit. And we missed guys coming off the edge a couple times there, so that really hurt us.”

About the mistakes, Fischer said, “That’s what you see in a scrimmage, usually, right? That’s what it’s for. It’s a teaching tool to give you a chance to get better.”

Edgewood won’t be playing Indian Creek this year during the regular season. Starting this year, Indian Creek is playing in the new Hoosier Legends Conference. Edgewood remains in the Western Indiana Conference.

Looking ahead to next Friday’s game against Mitchell, Fischer said, “I feel pretty good about where we’re at and the direction we’re going. I thought the kids’ energy was pretty good.”
