Fatal motorcycle crash on SR 45 near Monroe County airport

In a news release issued Saturday night (July 5), the Monroe County sheriff’s department reported a fatal motorcycle crash west of Bloomington at the intersection of SR 45 and Airport Road. The crash took place around 6 p.m.

In a news release issued Saturday night (July 5), the Monroe County sheriff’s department reported a fatal motorcycle crash west of Bloomington at the intersection of SR 45 and Airport Road. The crash took place around 6 p.m.

According to the news release, a Harley Davidson motorcycle and a Chevrolet Cruze collided, leaving the motorcyclist dead at the scene. According to the news release, the motorcyclist was Hunter Warthan (24) from Bedford, and the driver of the Chevrolet was Victoria Lewis (19), from Spencer.

According to the news release, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Based on an analysis of Monroe County crash data published by the Indiana Daily Student in 2023, for the period from 2003 to 2022 there were two fatal crashes at the intersection of SR 45 and Airport Road, one in 2008 and one in 2017. During the 20-year span of the IDS analysis, at the intersection there were more than 30 crashes with injuries, as well as several more non-injury crashes. The intersection has traffic signals.
