Happy Thanksgiving 2024: Not every bird is a turkey

As the old Thanksgiving saying goes, “The early bird gets the worm, but not every bird is a turkey, or even a bird.”

The wisdom in that old chestnut was evident this morning on a quick tour from 6th Street in downtown Bloomington, north on Walnut Street to Miller-Showers Park, and back to downtown, on a loop that included the Indiana University campus.

The inventory of turkeys was zero. But the B Square documented a red-tailed hawk on top of the AT&T building, some mallard ducks at the Miller-Showers detention ponds, a bluejay in a bush along the way, and two squirrels.

Temperatures hovered around 37 F degrees. A foggy overcast sky kept the sun from breaking through.

The weather forecast calls for freezing temperatures overnight, cold enough that Bloomington’s emergency severe weather shelter has been activated starting Thanksgiving night.

Happy Thanksgiving, Bloomington.
