The daily 2:30 p.m. press briefings that Indiana governor Eric Holcomb is now providing are made accessible to the Deaf community by ASL interpreter Andy Rork.

Not needing Rork’s translation at this Thursday’s briefing, was Holcomb’s answer to a reporter’s question, about the people he’d look to for guidance on lifting or extending his stay-at-home order. The order had gone into effect two days earlier.

The governor’s wordless answer was to extend his arm to the right, pointing to the place off camera, where Indiana State Health Commissioner, Kristina Box, was standing

That meant he’d be listening to Box and other Indiana officials for their on-the-ground assessment of the conditions in Indiana. That is, he wouldn’t be taking direction from President Donald Trump’s administration.

Here’s how the exchange went:

Reporter: We’re hearing that the Trump administration has sent guidance to the governors about how they should…eventually relax the stay-at-home orders that have been issued. So I wanted to know, who exactly are you going to be listening to, when it comes time to adjust or extend those orders?

Gov. Holcomb: [points]

Reporter: For the folks who are listening and not watching, who was that?

Gov. Holcomb: I will be listening to doctors, physicians, scientists, law enforcement, the folks who are on the ground in the state of Indiana. And we’ll adjust accordingly.

The daily briefings are available live-streamed on the governor’s Facebook page.
