Late January cold sets record for Bloomington

Two records for cold temperature were set on the last day of January this year in Bloomington, Indiana: a coldest low of -10 F; and a coldest high of 2 F.

The day isn’t over yet, but the IU weather station—a National Weather Service Cooperative Observer Program site—has a 24-hourly observation time of 7 a.m., according to the NWS.  So the daily temps for Jan. 31 from the IU station already appear in the NOAA Regional Climate Center database.

The previous record for coldest low stood for 83 years.  The -10 F low recorded at the IU station, for the 24-hour period ending at 7 a.m. this morning, was 1 degree colder than the previous coldest low temperature for Jan. 31, which was set in 1936.

The 2 F high was 4 degrees colder than the previous record, set in 2004.

The period of record for those extremes goes back to Nov. 15, 1895.
