Local government kicks off new year with first meetings of 2019
This week the elected bodies of Monroe County and the City of Bloomington – as well as several appointed boards and commissions – hold their regular sessions for the first time in 2019, following the holiday break.
Monroe County
The 7-member Monroe County Council meets on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Their agenda includes a $2.261 million contract to fund renovation and construction of the county’s Youth Services Bureau. Tuesday’s meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in Room 306 of the county courthouse in downtown Bloomington.
On Wednesday, Jan. 9, the 3-member Monroe County Board of Commissioners meets at 10 a.m. at the courthouse’s Nat U. Hill room. Their regular meeting is followed by a working session with reports from the public works and legal departments, as well as from Angela Purdie, the commissioners’ administrator.
These county meetings include opportunities for public commentary and can be watched online on the Community Access Television Services (CATS) county channel.

City of Bloomington
On Wednesday, Jan. 9, the 9-member Bloomington City Council holds its annual organization meeting, which includes the election of officers and appointments to various city advisory boards and commissions. There’s also an item to approve 2019 salaries for the city’s appointed officers, union and non-union staff.
Other agenda items include initial votes to establish two historic districts: The Maple Heights Conservation District and the Smith Road Historic District (Harvey-Nelson House).

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at city hall, 401 N. Morton St. It’s followed immediately by a Committee of the Whole meeting at the same location. In addition to further discussion of items from the council meeting, the agenda includes discussion of a resolution to extend the Bloomington Urban Enterprise Zone for an additional five years.
Wednesday’s council meeting includes several opportunities for public commentary and can be watched online on the CATS city channel.
