Man who was shot, drove a mile to Switchyard Park, had apparently tried to burglarize residence
In a Thursday afternoon news release, Bloomington police department (BPD) reported that a 39-year-old man found with gunshot wounds in Switchyard Park early in the morning had not been shot at that location.
The 39-year-old had apparently driven there after being shot several times when he allegedly attempted a burglary—at the home of another man he knew, about a mile away, southeast of the intersection of Hillside Drive and Henderson Street.
In the news release, BPD reported that the first 911 call came in around 5:10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1. The call was made by a 35-year-old man who reported a burglary in progress at his home in the 1700 block of South Pinestone Court. According to the release, the 911 caller claimed that someone had “busted in the window to his bedroom,” so he had shot at the person.
When officers arrived at the Pinestone Court scene, they found a broken window in the bedroom of the residence, according to the news release. Investigators also located several bullet holes around the broken window and determined that the shots had been fired from inside the home, according to the release.
A second 911 call came in around 5:21 a.m. from the 39-year-old claiming that he had been shot. The caller said he was in Switchyard Park at the basketball courts near the Bloomington police substation, according to the news release. When officers arrived in Switchyard Park they found the 39-year-old man with several gunshot wounds. Officers determined that he was the man who had been shot in connection with the first call about the burglary in progress.
Investigators concluded that the wounded man had driven himself to the park after fleeing from the burglary scene on foot. The wounded man was taken by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and was later transferred to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment, according to the news release.
According to the news release, the men involved in the incident knew each other. BPD continues to investigate the case.
No charges have been filed. According to the news release, when the investigation is complete, the report will be forwarded to the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office for review to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
