Monroe County jail notebook: Initial look at population profile

Of the 247 inmates who were being held in the Monroe County jail on July 14, 2026, 22 of them had been held there for more than a year.

The median length of time a prisoner had been in jail was about 60 days.

That’s based on a B Square analysis of records produced by Monroe County in response to a formal request made by a Bloomington resident.

Based on data extracted by The B Square from the Monroe County Jail inmate search app on July 10, just 37 (15%) of the 246 were women.

A trend of racial disparity, where Black prisoners are over-represented in the jail compared to their population in Monroe County, has been long-documented by the Monroe County branch of the NAACP. The same trend is seen in the July 10 numbers: Black prisoners made up about 21% of the jail population on that day.

The B Square is working to develop a workflow for analyzing the jail population information so that a routine snapshot of information about the prisoner population, beyond the basic population numbers, is available to the public. The B Square hopes eventually to work with Monroe County government to establish a standard records request that can be made and easily be fulfilled about the jail population.

A significant number of prisoners could soon be transported out of the Monroe County facility to other neighboring county jails, to relieve overcrowded conditions. Monroe County sheriff Ruben Marté is looking to move 50–100 prisoners to other facilities.

That’s why establishing a baseline now for basic demographic information, as well as for the disposition of cases, is important.

Here’s a look at the upcoming proceedings for the 22 prisoners at the Monroe County jail who have been held for more than a year.

• A prisoner booked into the facility on Sept. 12, 2022, on charges that include arson has a jury trial set for Aug. 3, 2026, in front of judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff.
• A prisoner booked into the facility on Oct. 30, 2023, on charges that include failure to appear/contempt and resisting law enforcement has a pretrial conference set for July 29, 2026, in front of judge Valeri Haughton.
