The winner of that race will face Republican Nathan Williamson in the Nov. 8, 2022 general election. Williams is unopposed for sheriff in the Republican Party primary.

Thomas has worked as sheriff’s deputy in Monroe County for the last 26 years. He is now a lieutenant. Before that, he worked as a corrections officer at the jail, a job he started after graduating from Bloomington North High School.

Thomas has served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and is currently a member of the Moose Lodge.

On his campaign website, Thomas outlines five priorities: enriching community engagement; pursuing alternatives to arrest and prosecution; diversity recruitment; transparency; and enhancing jail inmate programming.
