With a 49-14 win over Terre Haute South Vigo on Friday, the Bloomington South Panthers improved their record to 5-0, and now look to make it a half dozen wins next week against Southport.
Photographer Dave Quick was in Terre Haute to capture some of the magic from Friday’s game. Ahead of Quick’s photo gallery, here’s a blow-by-blow for the first four touchdowns of the game.
The opening kickoff from Bloomington South was caught at about the 10-yard line by South Vigo’s Mayson Lewis who returned it 90 yards all the way to the end zone. Just a few seconds into the game the Panthers were down 7–0.
It took a couple of possessions for the Bloomington South squad to find their rhythm, and it was the running back tandem of Braylen Townsend and Shaun Cooper who laid down the beat.
The Panthers got their first score at around the 6-minute mark in the first quarter. After a South Vigo punt, the Panthers took over on their own 47-yard line. On the second play of the drive, Townsend ran 34 yards to the 19 of South Vigo. The next play was an incomplete pass, but on 2nd-and-10 at the 19-yard line, Cooper took the handoff from quarterback Duncan Combs and ran up the middle, right over one South Vigo defender, and then out of the grasp of two other would-be tacklers, into the end zone standing up. The extra point tied things up at 7-7.
Starting at the South Vigo 35-yard line after a South Vigo punt, the Panthers covered that distance to the end zone mostly with its running game. Cooper put the final 2-yard touch on the drive, to bring the score to 14-7 for the Panthers after the extra point.
After another South Vigo punt, the Panthers started on their own 24-yard line. A run by Cooper got the ball out to the 36. Then it was time for quarterback Duncan Combs to show off the passing attack of the Panthers with three short completions on successive plays to Conner Parker, Sam Giles, and Jalen Williams, which got the ball to the Bloomington South 47.
With the ball on his own 47-yard line, with 6:57 left in the second quarter, facing 2nd-and-11, Cooper took the handoff from quarterback Combs at the right hash and started left. Spotting a crease up the middle he busted through it and then just outran the defense—except for one South Vigo defender who managed to swipe the ball out of Cooper’s hands at about the 5-yard line, sending the ball bouncing to the turf, robbing Cooper of what would have been his third touchdown on the night.
But Conner Parker was trailing the play and scooped up the fumble and took it the rest of the way into the end zone. With the extra point the score was 21-7.
