On Sunday (March 22) around 11 a.m, Bloomington’s Miller-Showers Park was alive with fancy birds two days into spring under sunny skies with the temperature at 77F° and climbing towards the forecasted high of 84F°. Cardinals, robins, hawks, ducks—what else could you want?

Missing from the mix were any great blue herons, which are frequent park visitors. But it is hard to complain when Indiana’s state bird stops to pose for the camera. Cardinalis cardinalis—so nice they named it twice—was hard to miss through the still-bare branches of the trees.

A red-shouldered hawk perched for a while, before swooping over to the opposite side of  the detention pond to fuss around for a bit near the ground. It would not count as a spring day without a standard robin, and Miller-Showers did not disappoint.
