The B Square Bulletin encourages broadcast, online, and print media to republish B Square articles and other media without cost or prior licensing agreement, but only using the following guidelines. (It would be great if you give us a heads up when you republish our work.) Note that The B Square Bulletin uses content from public domain, government, and other sources, for which these guidelines do not apply.
Accuracy
- Republishing does not allow for altering facts, figures, or quotations.
- Headlines can be adjusted for length or clarity, but must not misrepresent the piece.
Attribution
- Attribution should be featured prominently in a way that is appropriate to the medium of the original and republishing. For example, “Reporting by The B Square Bulletin” or similar should be included in the byline, at the top of the story, in onscreen text for videos, or voiced for audio-only formats.
- Do not remove or alter B Square bylines.
- When republishing online, a hyperlink should be included to the original content in The B Square. Hyperlinks embedded in the original should be included in the republished material.
Editing
- Light copyediting (grammar, your own in-house style, shortening for space) of text is acceptable.
- Substantive changes that alter meaning, emphasis, or context are not permitted.
- Summaries or excerpts must retain the original sense.
- If you make changes that are more significant than style tweaks—such as adding a comment from a local official—you should include a note like this: “Additional reporting by [name of publication].”
Visuals
- Photos, graphics, videos, and other documents must retain original captions and credits.
- When an image indicates a credit, any use of the image outside these guidelines has to be negotiated with the person named in the credit.
- Cropping for space is acceptable, but altering the substance (e.g., removing people from a photo) is not.
- Don’t use B Square Bulletin material to imply endorsements.
Corrections
- If an error is found in republished content, issue a correction consistent with The B Square’s own correction.
- Do not “quietly” alter text; corrections must be transparent.
Commercial Use
- B Square Bulletin content cannot be resold or sublicensed without permission.
- Advertisements should not appear on the same screen as material previously published in The B Square, except with explicit written permission from The B Square Bulletin.
Context
- The B Square’s work must be presented in full journalistic context; do not pair excerpts with misleading headlines, or commentary that distorts meaning.
