Sheriff asks public for footage after bicyclist critically hurt in northern Monroe County crash
A Friday afternoon collision between a Honda Accord and a bicyclist near North Bottom and West Maple roads left a 19-year-old IU student in critical condition. The Monroe County sheriff’s office is seeking witnesses and video as its Major Crash Investigation Team reviews the crash.

On Friday (Dec. 5) a little before 4 p.m., a Honda Accord collided with a bicyclist near the intersection of North Bottom and West Maple roads in the northern part of the county, just northeast of the city of Bloomington’s Blucher Poole wastewater treatment plant. The cyclist was critically injured. That's according to a news release from the Monroe County sheriff’s office.
The sheriff is asking anyone who has video footage of the collision, or who saw it, to call (812) 349-2781.
According to the news release, a 20-year-old man was driving the Honda Accord. It was a 19-year-old man, an Indiana University student, who was riding the bicycle.
The bicyclist was taken by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and is in critical condition, according to the news release. Investigators with Monroe County’s Major Crash Investigation Team are now reviewing the crash. The driver of the Accord remained at the scene and is cooperating, according to the news release.
The county’s crash investigation team was recently formed with $43,900 in grant funding from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) and is made up of the following: Sergeant Kyle Moulden (Team Commander); Sergeant Bennett Dillon (Crash Reconstruction Specialist); Detective Dillen Friend (Crash Reconstruction Specialist); and Corporal Gunnar Ortlieb (Drug Recognition Expert). The grant was approved by Monroe County commissioners at their Oct. 23, 2025 regular meeting.
According to the city of Bloomington’s crash dashboard, in the five years between 2019 and 2024, there were eight crashes near the intersection of North Bottom and West Cottage Grove roads, two with a serious injury. Half of them involved running off the road and one involved cell phone usage. None of them involved a bicyclist.
