Shooting in downtown Bloomington leaves 19-year-old man wounded

Around 1 a.m. on Sunday (Sept. 6) a man was shot once in his neck and shoulder then taken to IU Health Bloomington hospital where he is believed to be in stable condition. That’s according to a news release from Bloomington police issued later the same morning.

The scene of the shooting was near the intersection of Kirkwood Avenue and Lincoln Street in downtown Bloomington.

According to the release, the 19-year-old victim declined to provide any information to police when officers attempted to question him.

The investigation is active, and no suspect has yet been identified, according to the release. Bloomington police are asking anyone with video or information about the shooting to contact detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477 or scottc@bloomington.in.gov

The scene of the shooting is described in the release as “near the southwest corner of the Monroe County Public Library.” When officers arrived at the scene they found blood and personal belongings on the sidewalk, but no victim.

According to the release, a little while later officers were notified that a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his neck and shoulder had arrived at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. That’s where officers tried unsuccessfully to question him.

According to the release, officers did talk to several witnesses who were in the vicinity at the time of the shooting. They told officers that there appeared to be an altercation between two men and that one of them then drew a handgun and pointed it at the other one. Witnesses heard a single gunshot, and people started running from the area.

According to the release, officers checked the front of the Old National Bank across the street from the shooting scene and found damage to the brick that appeared to have been caused by a bullet. Witnesses also told officers that after the shooting, the suspect got into a nearby vehicle and fled the scene before officers got there.
