2024 election notebook: June 20 school board candidate filing deadline

Two weeks from now, it should be clear which candidates will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot for election to the boards of two local school districts—Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation (RBBCSC) and Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC).
The deadline for candidates to submit the paperwork is at noon on Thursday, June 20. The place to submit the paperwork is the old Johnson’s Hardware building aka Election Central, at 7th and Madison streets in downtown Bloomington.
The required forms include a petition with supporting signatures from 10 registered voters who live within the corporation boundaries, as well as a statement of economic interests.
All eligible voters in the school corporation territory vote for each school board seat. The residential districts for each seat define only where a candidate has to live, in order to run for that seat.
For RBBCSC, the Monroe County website shows that all three incumbents whose four-year terms are expiring have filed their statements of economic interests: Brad Tucker (at-large), Larry DeMoss (District Richland), and Jimmie Dale Durnill (District Bean Blossom).
The county election division staff don’t upload petition signature forms to the website.
For MCCSC, the Monroe County website shows that of the four members whose terms are expiring, only Ross Grimes (District 6) has filed his statement of economic interests.
Incumbents serving in the other three MCCSC seats with expiring terms are April Hennessy (District 2), Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer (District 4), and Erin Cooperman (District 5).
The territory for RBBCSC consists of two townships—Richland and Bean Blossom. The board has five seats—one for a member who can live anywhere in the corporation boundaries, and two for each of the townships. The other two incumbents on the RBBCSC board are Dana Kerr (Richland District) and Angie Jacobs (Bean Blossom District).
The MCCSC territory is divided into seven districts, which boundaries are new for this year’s election, after the board decided on Plan A in a redistricting process that took place a year ago.
MCCSC board incumbents with terms that are not expiring this year are: Erin Wyatt (District 1); Ashley Pirani (District 3); and Brandon Shurr (District 7).
