Around 4:15 p.m. on Monday afternoon, Philipp Kaider pedaled through Bloomington as the race leader in the Race Across America (RAAM). Last year Kaider was also the leader as he cruised through Bloomfield, headed north at SR 43, grabbed West 3rd Street, then headed north again on Curry Pike to connect with SR 46, following the big northern arc around the city.

The 40-year-old Austrian had about a comfortable 270-mile lead over second-place rider Thomas Mauerhofer, another Austrian. It was deja vu all over again, because last year Kaider rolled into town with about a 200-mile lead over the second place rider, who was also an Austrian. But last year it was Lukas Kaufman, who was trailing his faster compatriot.

The RAAM is a 3,000-mile west-to-east bicycle race across the United States, which as for the last several years passed through Bloomington.

RAAM organizers have set up a live tracking map for race fans to locate the current location of the riders. At his current pace, Mauerhofer would be projected to pass through Bloomington around around 2 p.m. on Tuesday (June 23).
