Bloomington man, 23, charged with murder in fatal shooting on northwest side

A 23-year-old Bloomington man faces a murder charge after a 24-year-old man was shot in the head Thursday evening near Crestmont Park. Police city witnesses saying the suspect approached the victim on a porch and fired. Witnesses cited a suspected relationship involving Gilreath's ex-girlfriend.

Bloomington man, 23, charged with murder in fatal shooting on northwest side

A 23-year-old Bloomington man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a shooting Thursday evening (Oct. 8) on Bloomington’s northwest side. That’s according to a news release issued early Friday afternoon by Bloomington police.

The victim is described in the news release as a 24-year-old man who was sitting on the porch with another man in the 1000 block of North Illinois Street, which is on the western edge of Crestmont Park.

Witnesses said the suspect approached the two on foot, took a handgun from his waistband, and shot the victim in the head, according to the release. According to the release, witnesses told police the shooter believed the victim was having a relationship with the shooter’s ex-girlfriend.

According to the news release, the call came in around 8:15 p.m. and officers found the suspect, Jaymon Trey Gilreath, walking a few blocks away from the scene at 8:23 p.m. Officers found a 9mm handgun in a holster near a park bench on 13th Street that they believed was the weapon used in the shooting.

The victim, who is not named in the release, was taken by ambulance IU Health Bloomington Hospital and was declared deceased at the hospital at 9:49 p.m.

Jail records show that Gilreath was booked into the Monroe County jail at 12:52 Friday morning.
