An 18-year-old Bloomington man has been arrested in the Kirkwood Avenue shooting in the wee hours of April 26, on Little 500 weekend.
That’s according to a news release issued on Wednesday (May 6). Bloomington police say called-in tips in response to circulated still images from video footage helped identify the suspect.
The total number of people directly injured as part of two shootings was five, all young women.
The shooting for which police have made an arrest took place in front of Five Guys on Kirkwood, between Grant and Dunn streets on Kirkwood Avenue.
Police say they are continuing to investigate and are trying to identify a second suspect, who was involved in a shooting in front of Chipotle, almost immediately following the one in front of Five Guys. According to the news release, it’s not yet known if the two shootings are related.
According to the release more video is sought of the area around Chipotle and anyone with video footage or additional information should contact detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477.
Some additional details of the shooting were included in Wednesday’s news release. The fight between two women that apparently started the incident included a 20-year-old Indiana University student. She told police she got into a physical fight with several people she didn’t know after somebody threw water on her.
The man in the video can be seen firing a shot into the sidewalk near the entrance to Five Guys.
After images of the man were released on April 30, the news release says that “within an hour” several callers identified him as Lewis James May, an 18-year old from Bloomington. After police found the address where May was living, on Dorchester Drive in the city’s southeast quarter, they watched the place and on Tuesday saw him leaving in a car, followed him downtown and arrested him there.
After getting a search warrant, police found a Taurus 9mm handgun as well as a backpack that resembled a shark, and confiscated them as evidence.
May was booked into jail and charged with two counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon (level 5 felony), criminal recklessness (level 5 felony), and pointing a firearm at another (level 6 felony).
