A little after midnight Sunday morning on Kirkwood Avenue between Grant and Dunn streets, Bloomington police officers heard what they believe were several gunshots in a large crowd they were monitoring.
That’s according to a news release issued around 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
After the apparent gunshots, the crowd started scattering, and officers immediately found several wounded people.
At least nine people were wounded, based on information in the release. Police have no suspects in custody and are asking anyone who might have video of the shooting, to contact detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477.
According to the release, some of the people who were wounded might have been struck by bullet fragments instead of direct gunshots. The release reports a total of nine people who were taken to the hospital for their injuries.
From the downtown area, five victims were taken to the hospital by ambulance, one by police squad car and two others by personal cars. Another injured person, who was found at a gas station in the 200 block of West 17th Street with injuries believed to be related to the Kirkwood shooting, was taken to the hospital by ambulance, according to the news release.
The release says that officers from several agencies assisted at the scene, including Indiana University police department, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Indiana State Police. Drones were deployed to document the scene. A state police helicopter also responded to assist in the investigation, according to the release.
The mayor and chief of police are scheduled to give a news conference about the shooting at city hall at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
